Description
Community justice – including community policing, community courts, and community probation – is being given considerable attention in the current criminal justice system in the United States. Community policing is perhaps the most widely practiced use of community justice. Not surprisingly, the manner in which community policing is implemented differs from one location to another; however, two common elements have been found: problem solving and community involvement.
This study is a comprehensive evaluation of policing and the potential for community engagement through policing in Nashville, GA, a small city in the southeastern U.S. The study focuses on two central research questions:
1. What are citizens’ perceptions about policing and community engagement in criminal justice in Nashville, GA?
2. What are governmental officials’ (including city officials and law enforcement officers) perceptions about policing and community engagement in criminal justice in Nashville, GA?
Data was triangulated from three sources: interviews were conducted with governmental officials, focus groups were held with law enforcement officers, and written questionnaires were administered to citizens in the city. This thesis describes the findings from this research.
